1950 Society

During the 1952 campaign and early years of President Eisenhower, he was faced with the challenge of Senator Joseph McCarthy who was determined to single out all of the Communists whom he thought had infiltrated the American Government. One of McCarthy's targets turned out to be General George Marshall who had been seen as one of the country's best respected figures in the military and international affairs. His attempts to reconcile the Nationalists and Communist forces in China led McCarthy to believe that he was actually helping the Communists all together. To Eisenhower, he found it hard to believe because he and Marshall were the closest of friends and Marshall was the one responsible for his rise in military. He saw this assumption as absurd and chose not to believe it or any other accusations that McCarthy could come up with.McCarthyism put a chill on honest political debate for many years, and made a mockery of traditional American values of due process and equal justice. Due to Eisenhower's failure to stand up to McCarthy, he failed to turn the nation away from a damaging course. It eventually was seen as a black mark on his presidency.

Ariel's Hidden Hand President text:
The problem with Eisenhower to the people, was that it seemed like he was not doing anything at all. He vacationed a lot and played golf two days a week. It even seemed like the Secretary of State was the one really doing a lot of work. Like my summary above stated, this must have but a black mark on his presidency.

McCarthy Telegram to Truman

A. List three things the author said that you think are important:1. How Senator McCarthy had a piece of paper saying that over 200 employees were card carrying members of a Communist Party. 2. The fear of communism which had existed since the 19th century. 3. McCarthy was placed on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on the investigations of the Senate Committee on Government Operations.

B. Why do you think this document was written?- I think this document was written because McCarthy was trying to inform Truman that there were communists within the state department.

C. What evidence in the document helps you know why it was written? Quote from the document.- For one McCarthy says that they were able to compile a list of 57 communists in thew state department that were now available to Truman.

D. List two things the document tells you about life in the United States at the time it was written:1. Communists were not likes all too much during this time. 2. They are worried about the loyal American Democrats that could be affected by the Communists.
E. Write a question to the author that is left unanswered by the document:
How exactly should the President attempt to deal with the situation of exposing the Communists?

F. Date of document
February 11, 1950
G. Author:
Author of the Telegram was Senator Joseph McCarthy
H. Purpose of document
To inform President Truman about the Communists within the state department and what could possibly be done about the situation and the consequences that could result from not solving this predicament.

Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan is about a Captain and his soldiers who during WWII were sent on a new assignment in saving Private Ryan. Private Ryan's brothers had both been killed in action, and to spare the mother of more grieving, the character played by Tom Hanks and his soldiers were sent on this mission to bring him home. Along their journey, they encounter one private with the name James Ryan, but he is unfortunately was not the right guy. As the Captain and his troops pressed on with their mission, they finally reach a demolished town and Private Ryan was present but refused to go home because he wanted to stay with the only "brothers" that he had left. The Captain and his soldiers decide to aid them in protecting what is left of the town. As the Germans roll in, they bring with them heavy artillery and begin taking down the soldiers one by one. The Captain eventually took a shot to the shoulder and died. Moving onward in time, Ryan is taken back from his flashback and after visiting the Captains grave, he wonders whether or not he had lived a good life that was worth the death of the other soldiers. In the end, he salutes the grave and the movie ends.

1. The life of a soldier can be very rough, especially since they for one carry everything they need on their back They also need to deal with the psychological factors of witnessing death and shooting someone. Some also who end up losing a limb or become disabled have to deal with their disability later on.
2. Private James Ryan who was the talk of the movie because he had to be rescued plays a very noble man who didn't want to abandon his troops even though he received the bad knew of his brothers death. In the end though, he questions whether or not he had lived a quality life and if it was worth all the lives that were taken to save him.
3. Honestly, if I had been in this war, I probably would have ended up buried with all the other soldiers, but I was make sure that I would do my part in the war before I go so that I go with valor.

Causes for WWI Political Cartoon

This cartoon shows how when one person attacks another one, a chain reaction can start because the friends will attempt to defend their friends and this is sort of how WWI started.

The US entered the war because for one, when the Germans sunk the Lusitania, many American civilians died. This angered many Americans. Also, the US had made some investments in Britain and France and they needed to win the war so that the US could be reimbursed.

Imperialism Cartoon

I feel that this European cartoon shows how people took advantage of others in order to gain their money and big business.
America had always wanted to expand the country and became imperialistic because economic reasons, military interests, and cultural superiority. If it wasn't for imperialism expanding in America, Hawaii and Alaska would not have become states.

New Jersey v. T.L.O.

1. T.L.O.s purse should not have been searched because since she was accused of smoking and not of possessing them, it wasn't a real enough crime to have to do a search like that.
2. The 4th Amendment shouldn't apply unless there is the possibility of crime because if not, it would violate personal rights. Therefore, the 4th Amendment should't apply.
3. I don't think so because it is a violation of personal rights, and unless they get a search warrant, they should not be able to search her purse.
4. Usually at my old school, they would take a metal detector and have us empty our pockets and the girls purses. It could probably happen.
5. They should rule it in violation of her rights.

Labor Unions

During the 1900 period, labor unions were a main piece that influenced wages and working conditions. At that time, labor unions were difficult because they required the people to produce goods for everyone and free riders that wish to not even contribute at all. Craftsmen did the work of early industry at the time, and the unions they formed back then helped give a bargaining alliance with other craftsmen. In the 1900s the rise of industry was a major part of labor unions because it began to bring along inventions like the steam engine and other effective tools to make work more efficient.
