1950 Society

During the 1952 campaign and early years of President Eisenhower, he was faced with the challenge of Senator Joseph McCarthy who was determined to single out all of the Communists whom he thought had infiltrated the American Government. One of McCarthy's targets turned out to be General George Marshall who had been seen as one of the country's best respected figures in the military and international affairs. His attempts to reconcile the Nationalists and Communist forces in China led McCarthy to believe that he was actually helping the Communists all together. To Eisenhower, he found it hard to believe because he and Marshall were the closest of friends and Marshall was the one responsible for his rise in military. He saw this assumption as absurd and chose not to believe it or any other accusations that McCarthy could come up with.McCarthyism put a chill on honest political debate for many years, and made a mockery of traditional American values of due process and equal justice. Due to Eisenhower's failure to stand up to McCarthy, he failed to turn the nation away from a damaging course. It eventually was seen as a black mark on his presidency.

Ariel's Hidden Hand President text:
The problem with Eisenhower to the people, was that it seemed like he was not doing anything at all. He vacationed a lot and played golf two days a week. It even seemed like the Secretary of State was the one really doing a lot of work. Like my summary above stated, this must have but a black mark on his presidency.
